Your new role

  • You will be assisting our team with the day–to–day duties. You will learn about the agrochemical markets and the key role we play in trying to pursue a more economical and sustainable future for crop protection. You will be invited to learn with the team about the whole process from the design of the novel compounds by our scientists in our labs at Alderley Park, through to the in–house screening at the Greenhouse facilities at Ostlers Nurseries, Great Warford.
  • You will screen the fungicide screening, this will include learning about the key fungal pathogens, how to keep live cultures and incorporate them into the biological assessments.
  • You will execute the insecticide screening, you will observe insect behaviours and evaluate biological assessments.
  • You will handle the herbicide screenings. You will follow–up the pre–emergence and post–emergence preparation and treatment.
  • You will be responsible for growing different crops and weed species, assessing the level of crop damage inflicted by novel compounds and market standards and looking at phytotoxicity types.
  • You will be cropping seeds from mature plants to ensure a reliable stock of seeds to use in the herbicide screening platforms.
  • You will focus on the preparation work for the herbicide & insecticide screenings, this will include learning about the key weed and insect species. Learning to successfully germinate, propagate and crop seeds for the herbicide screening. You will also learn how to grow select plant species for the insect rearing for our in–house insecticide screens.
  • You will learn all the current protocols and formulations for the screenings that are carried out in house and apply this into sample preparations and final applications of the novel compounds.

What you'll need to succeed

  • You have a HNC or HND degree level or equivalent in Biology, Microbiology or Plant science.
  • You are a keen plant or horticulturalist – you have a good all round knowledge of Biology and demonstrable application of these skills into practical work.
  • You have a PA1, this is a safe handling of pesticides.
  • You are a good observer, are handy and you feel comfortable working with crop protection products. Laboratory experience is a plus.
  • You have a good attention to detail and you can work consistently to required standards.
  • You have good IT skills for data handling.
  • You enjoy working in a small team and you can work autonomously.

  • You must be eligible to work in the UK (Macclesfield). This is a full–time position: working hours 30–37 hours per week.
