Job Details
Applied Microbiology International (AMI) invites applications for the role of Junior Editor (JEs) for LAM for a period of two years to begin in summer 2023. We will be recruiting 16 JEs in this intake. No editorial experience is necessary as this is a trainee position.
About LAM
Established in 1985 Letters in Applied Microbiology (LAM) is wholly owned by AMI. The journal is hybrid and publishes research and reviews in the broad field of applied microbiology.
After many years publishing with Blackwell and then Wiley, as of January 2023 the journal is published with our new publishing partner, Oxford University Press, under the new editorial leadership of Dr Marcela Hernández, Editor-in-Chief, and Dr Callum Cooper, Deputy Editor.
Our vision for LAM is to be the journal that supports and develops the next generation of applied microbiologists. We are looking to focus on early career researchers and be accessible and inclusive. As such, we have developed the structure of the board to enable us to train the editors of the future.
Candidates
We are seeking candidates who are active early career researchers and have completed a PhD within the last six years. Candidates should currently be working in the field of applied microbiology, including food microbiology, environmental microbiology, and clinical microbiology. We are looking for candidates who are passionate about communicating science and have a keen interest in academic journal publishing. Applicants from across the globe are welcome to apply.
Overall purpose of the role
You will work with your mentor, a Senior Editor, to learn how to handle papers through the peer review process. You will learn how to manage the initial submission through to decision in an efficient and fair way, upholding the highest ethical standards and striving to give all authors the best experience in their interactions with LAM.
Responsibilities
- Actively participate in Editorial Board meetings with AMI and the publisher, in person and online
- Contribute ideas for development, feedback on how to improve processes and author service
- Maintain the integrity of the review process and publishing ethics, providing guidance to authors and reviewers as appropriate
- Act as an ambassador for the journal within your community and at international events
Benefits
- Extensive training, mentoring and administrative support from Senior Editors and the Publisher
- A small annual honorarium
- Free AMI membership
- Discounted registration at AMI events
- A certificate at completion of training from AMI
Applications
Applicants should submit the following:
- CV
- A letter of application outlining why they are interested in the role (500-750 words)
Applications are due by Friday 30 June 2023, and should be emailed to publishing@appliedmicrobiology.org.
