Our client, a world leader in providing purpose–bred animals for biomedical research, is looking to recruit a Health Monitoring Laboratory Manager to oversee the Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Serology, and Pathology services. The successful candidate will lead a team of scientists and technicians to support the company and customers activities by providing analytical and diagnostic results from a range of animal specimens.

Travel within the UK is required in this position. Due to the remote location of the main site, a full driving licence and own transport is essential.

Basic Requirements:

  • Scientific degree in a related field, such as Biomedical, Bioveterinary, or Veterinary
  • Significant operational experience in a laboratory, resulting in strong working knowledge and confidence in laboratory best practice
  • Previous management or supervisory experience
  • Expertise in microbiological techniques, such as ELISA, Multiplex Fluorometric Assays, IFA, HIA, and PCR
  • Experience in the development of molecular assays is advantageous
  • Previous experience in an animal laboratory is desirable
  • Confident using computer software such as LIMS, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Full driving licence and own transport.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Management and oversight of the Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Serology, and Parasitology services
  • Lead a team of health monitoring scientists and technicians in the provision of health monitoring, diagnostic, and environmental monitoring services
  • Organise daily workloads for the laboratories and allocate work
  • Supervision, management, and training of the Health Monitoring Services personnel including performing annual appraisals and following disciplinary and grievance procedures
  • Investigate and report on the presence of micro–organisms including bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi from biological specimens
  • Perform necropsy examinations of animal specimens
  • Carry out clinical bacteriology investigations and perform parasitology screening of animal samples
  • Manage the budget for the Laboratory and Health Monitoring Services
  • Provide scientific and technical advice to the company and customers on the appropriate investigations to perform, the scientific interpretation of results, and the appropriate steps for future investigations
  • Effectively communicate with the customer facing team and participate in marketing and sales strategies involving scientific services
  • Perform weekend duties and on–site health monitoring as required.
